TwinDEEPS present at the 12th World Sponge Conference

It was during the Open Public Session of the 12th World Sponge Conference that TwinDEEPS and its activities were presented to the citizens of Vila do Conde and portuguese- and spanish-speaking participants of the conference.

During this session, our team member Carolina Ventura spoked about the importance of deep-sea and how scientists investigate this area of our planet. Carolina used the TwinDEEPS expedition to the Gorringe Bank as an example, providing to the approximately 90 people in the audience an overview of her experience and the life aboard the RV Pelagia, as well some of the results and wonders of the deep-sea observed during the expedition.

Carolina also participated in a roundtable moderated by our team member José Queirós where, together with Javier Cristobo (from Instituto Español de Oceanografía, Spain) and Bárbara Ribeiro (from the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Saudi Arabia), Carolina explained how the data collected during the Gorringe expedition can be used to better understand the biodiversity and functioning of this ecosystem and to evaluate the potential impacts of climate change and pollution in this environment.
