Advancing Ocean Research Data Management through CIIMAR – AWI collaboration

TwinDEEPS is committed to adopt the highest standards in ocean research data management by establishing a strong collaboration between CIIMAR and AWI. Through this collaboration, CIIMAR benefits from AWI’s extensive expertise in ocean research data management, receiving support, mentorship and training to implement the best data management practices and standards.

Ensuring that ocean data is accessible, traceable, interoperable, and reusable is essential for strengthening scientific knowledge in ocean science. TwinDEEPS members Maria Paola Tomasino (Head of Open Science Data at CIIMAR) and Carolina Ventura (TwinDEEPS Data Steward) are focused in supporting researchers at CIIMAR adopting FAIR-aligned ocean data practices. They provide guidance on data management planning across all data-life cycle stages to ensure that information remains accurate, traceable, and accessible over time, supporting high-quality research and long-term preservation of ocean knowledge.

The data management practices implemented are aligned with international best practices, including guidance provided by the International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO: Guidelines for an Ocean Project or a Programme Data Management Plan. These guidelines reinforce the importance of well-designed data management plans to ensure ocean data is properly documented, shared, and preserved, which will ultimately strengthen the global capacity to generate reliable, FAIR, and impactful ocean knowledge.
