Exploring the Deep Ocean at Jornadas do Mar 2026

As part of outreach and communication activities, TwinDEEPS participated in Jornadas do Mar 2026, engaging with students, ocean enthusiasts, and aspiring marine scientists to highlight the importance of deep-ocean exploration and conservation.

TwinDEEPS participation in this initiative featured two complementary sessions. In the morning, the talk “Exploration and Conservation of Deep-Sea Ecosystems” introduced participants to the unique characteristics of deep-ocean environments, as well as the technologies used to study and protect them. In the afternoon, a hands-on workshop titled “Deep-Sea Biodiversity: Image Analysis using BIIGLE” provided practical experience in analyzing marine imagery for deep-sea biodiversity research.

Throughout the day, participants from across Portugal explored key topics, including:

  • The diversity of deep-ocean ecosystems and the tools used for their exploration
  • Methods for collecting deep-sea data, with a focus on video and image-based approaches, including their advantages and limitations
  • The role of image annotation and analysis in advancing the study of deep-sea biodiversity

Jornadas do Mar 2026 provided an excellent opportunity to foster curiosity and raise awareness about the deep ocean and its conservation.
