As part of outreach and communication activities, TwinDEEPS participated in Jornadas do Mar 2026, engaging with students, ocean enthusiasts, and aspiring marine scientists to highlight the importance of deep-ocean exploration and conservation.
TwinDEEPS participation in this initiative featured two complementary sessions. In the morning, the talk “Exploration and Conservation of Deep-Sea Ecosystems” introduced participants to the unique characteristics of deep-ocean environments, as well as the technologies used to study and protect them. In the afternoon, a hands-on workshop titled “Deep-Sea Biodiversity: Image Analysis using BIIGLE” provided practical experience in analyzing marine imagery for deep-sea biodiversity research.
Throughout the day, participants from across Portugal explored key topics, including:
- The diversity of deep-ocean ecosystems and the tools used for their exploration
- Methods for collecting deep-sea data, with a focus on video and image-based approaches, including their advantages and limitations
- The role of image annotation and analysis in advancing the study of deep-sea biodiversity
Jornadas do Mar 2026 provided an excellent opportunity to foster curiosity and raise awareness about the deep ocean and its conservation.
